Square Enix has finally revealed their Final Fantasy 7 NFTs that were originally teased almost a year ago. While other game companies in 2022 began to backtrack on plans to integrate NFTs into their intellectual properties, Square Enix stayed committed to blockchain technology. In his letter celebrating the start of 2022, Square Enix President Yosuke Matsuda expressed his commitment to blockchain technology and his plans to integrate NFTs into some of the company’s IPs, with Final Fantasy 7 being one of the first. Matsuda’s letter caused the stock price to rise eight percent after fans requested their reconsideration of their NFT plans. Matsuda’s goal was to make gaming more interesting and appealing to those who might not otherwise be motivated to play traditional games.
The Final Fantasy 7 Anniversary Art Museum Digital Card Plus is the name given to a collection of digital and physical trading cards based on the popular role-playing game celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2022. There will be 207 trading cards, 102 normal cards, premium foil duplicates, and three unrevealed cards. These cards will include art, images, and scenes from Final Fantasy 7 from its release in 1997.
Customers can purchase packs consisting of six physical cards and one digital collectible NFT card, which are priced at approximately $3 USD. A box set with 20 physical card packs is also available for pre-order on the Square Enix North American store for $79.80. The release date for these Final Fantasy 7 trading cards is listed as March 31, 2023, on the Japanese-language website. The site clarifies that the digital cards can be viewed on smartphones or PCs, and a Special website has already been launched where owners can trade or view their NFTs.
Square Enix has also recently revealed their upcoming NFT-based game, Symbiogenesis. In November 2022, when it was discovered that the company had trademarked the word “symbiogenesis,” many fans expressed hope that a Parasite Eve remaster would soon be announced. Instead, it turned out to be the title of an entire RPG built around blockchain technology that will feature 10,000 collectible NFTs.
While some companies still show some interest in NFTs, the fervor surrounding NFTs has subsided since 2021/2022. Final Fantasy 7 Remake is available on PC, PS4, and PS5.
