Persona 5 Tactica: A New Direction for the Persona Saga
Persona 5 was one of the most popular RPGs released in the past 10 years. Developer Atlus wasn’t content with just one successful game though. After Persona 5 came Persona 5 Dancing in Starlight, Persona 5 Royal, Persona 5 Strikers, Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth, and finally Persona 5 Tactica. With so many stories set in the Persona universe, something different was needed to maintain the series’ popularity, and Persona 5 Tactica aims to be that something.
Persona 5 Tactica: A New Story in a Familiar World
Even though it is set at the same time as Persona 5, Tactica doesn’t follow the other games’ story. Instead, it forges a different path in a place familiar to fans. This new direction adds a bit of freshness to the game’s more familiar tropes, but the new story may not make much sense to new players.
While familiar characters and a few new ones are present, they don’t stand out when viewed against the already eclectic cast of characters. They all take a backseat to the game’s new mystery, and discovering the truth about the world feels both fresh and well-trodden at the same time.
The Gameplay Experience
The game introduces new systems and changes to the gameplay, such as a small grid map with differences in height and distances that matter, providing a good shake-up to the game’s normal combat mode. It retains the turn-based system with an emphasis on tactical positioning and ranged attacks.
- Small grid map adds a new dynamic
- Stricter line-of-sight rules
- Changes in tactical positioning
However, some players may not enjoy the constrictions the changes force upon them. Additionally, after spending countless hours within the Persona 5 universe, some players may start to feel a bit of weariness with certain character personalities.
Game Soundtrack and Combat
The musical score of Persona 5 remains in full effect in Tactica, offering an enjoyable listening experience. The voice acting is well done and entertaining, with a surprising number of voice lines, and the character designs are interesting for the most part. However, the combat flows back and forth with large swings in players’ or enemies’ favor.
- Catchy music of Persona 5
- Well-executed voice acting
- Character designs are interesting
In higher difficulties, there can sometimes be a sense of unfairness with enemies’ ability to land critical hits, and in some missions, players may find themselves attempting to avoid combat entirely to complete the level. Lady Marie, the main antagonist, is depicted as an authoritative and intimidating figure.
Persona 5 Tactica: A New Take on the Persona Saga
Persona 5 Tactica offers a new direction for the series, with fresh gameplay changes and an intriguing storyline. While it may not appeal to all fans of the original game, it still retains the essence of the Persona universe and offers a different perspective.
