In January 2018, the Collegiate VR Esports League (CVRE) was established as a vibrant and inclusive community for collegiate VR and esports enthusiasts. With over 50 universities, colleges, and post-secondary schools participating, CVRE has become a leading platform for competitive and social VR gaming at the collegiate level.
The 11th season of CVRE has recently commenced, attracting registrations from 29 universities and over 115 players. As we delve into the latest updates for this season, let’s take a closer look at some of the featured games and the exciting developments in the world of collegiate VR esports.
The Exciting Addition of Breachers
One of the notable highlights of this season is the introduction of Breachers, a thrilling tactical 5v5 first-person shooter developed by Triangle Factory. Notably, Triangle Factory is also responsible for the popular competitive VR game, Hyper Dash. Breachers challenges players to strategically plan and execute assaults and defenses in intense close-quarters combat against opposing teams.
The game’s name stems from its unique feature that allows players to rappel down the sides of buildings and make dramatic entrances through windows, surprising their adversaries. While I must admit that I personally struggle with this game, it’s impressive to witness the younger players on my team showcase their exceptional strategizing skills to secure victories. Breachers serves as a catalyst for developing crucial leadership and team-building abilities, necessitating effective cooperation and meticulous planning.
As Breachers continues to gain popularity, Triangle Factory has been actively releasing new content and game modes, making it an ideal addition to the lineup of featured games in various VR leagues. For those interested in participating, registration for Breachers in CVRE’s 11th season will close at midnight CDT on Monday, October 9. To register, simply join the CVRE Discord server and complete the registration process on the CVRE website.
Beat Saber: The Beat Goes On
Another highly anticipated game in CVRE season 11 is Beat Saber. While registration for the game has already closed, those interested can still join the CVRE Discord server to stay informed about future qualifiers and engage in discussions about the game. Beat Saber continues to captivate players with its unique blend of music, rhythm, and virtual reality, providing an immersive and energetic experience.
Echo VR: A Farewell
Ready At Dawn’s renowned VR esport game, Echo VR, enjoyed immense popularity among collegiate-level players in 2018 and 2019. During the pandemic-induced shutdown of schools and universities, Echo VR served as a source of social engagement and physical activity for many students. However, the servers for Echo VR were unfortunately shut down on August 1, 2023, and the game was subsequently removed from the Meta store. As a result, CVRE season 11 bids farewell to this beloved game that played such a significant role in fostering the growth of the league.

Regional Teams: Embracing Diversity
While traditional esports teams have become commonplace in schools worldwide, the concept of VR esports is still relatively new. Many schools and universities had begun establishing teams before the pandemic disrupted their plans. However, with the resumption of activities, these educational institutions are once again recognizing the immense benefits of fusing physicality with technology.
To support the growth of school-based teams, CVRE actively encourages their formation. However, acknowledging that not all students have access to VR equipment or belong to institutions with established teams, CVRE also allows individuals to participate through regional teams. These regional teams unite players from a common area, transcending the boundaries of any specific educational institution. This inclusive approach is especially valuable in rural areas or communities with limited technological resources, ensuring that as many students as possible can experience the excitement of VR esports.
Students interested in joining regional teams can easily connect with other likeminded individuals by joining the CVRE Discord server.
